Dann, John R. — Jean Auel and John R. Dann write sweeping epics about fascinating people from prehistoric cultures. Their characters' colorful adventures, set against a well-researched landscape of long-ago Europe, incorporate scenes of war, romance, and spiritual discoveries as they introduce readers to the beauty and brutality of the time. -- Sarah Johnson
Gear, Kathleen O'Neal; Gear, W. Michael — Although their novels are set later in time and in North America, not Europe, Kathleen O'Neal and W. Michael Gear offer a similar sense of discovery, adventure, and survival with a romantic tone. The characters are inviting and sympathetic, like Auel's, though they do not continue from book to book. -- Katherine Johnson
Allan, Margaret, 1922- — Jean M. Auel writes a prehistoric series that is rich in detail, character-driven and has a strong sense of place. Readers who enjoy these novels might also enjoy the novels of Margaret Allan for the same reason. -- Nanci Milone Hill

Based on research, richly detailed passages create a strong sense of place and era with attention to daily life and character's perspectives. Dramatic, even steamy, moments spice their narratives. Auel is more romantic, Anton more moving. -- Matthew Ransom

Great and extremely well researched. The key is in the details. Definitely for ages 14 or over, though.

Interesting and well-researched. Especially knowledgeable about the properties of various plants and how they can be used for healing, etc.
